Orthotics
Orthotics are medical devices that aid patients who experience difficulty using their limbs or other body parts. These devices are designed to enhance or correct the function of a body part that is not working properly.
Orthotics can be used to alleviate issues resulting from deformities or deficiencies, reduce stress on specific body parts, and allow them to heal without inflammation, swelling, or discomfort.
Common examples of orthotics include spinal orthoses, which treat back and spine issues such as scoliosis, and foot orthotics, which typically take the form of insoles. Various types of braces are also considered orthotics and can be beneficial for a variety of conditions.

Prosthetics
Prosthetics are artificial replacements for missing body parts, while orthotics are designed to assist existing body parts.
The most widely recognized type of prosthetics is artificial limbs. Individuals who have lost a leg due to a congenital disability or amputation could have a prosthetic limb instead.
Prosthetic devices can vary in technological complexity. Advanced types can provide patients with a high level of limb functionality, enabling them to perform various actions that would otherwise be challenging or impossible.

Services & Rehabilitation Team

A team of experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation can collaborate with you to develop a customized plan and equip you for the future. Your rehabilitation group could comprise:
- A physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor focuses on restoring health and functional abilities after amputation, and creates a custom treatment plan built around your needs.
- If prosthesis is part of your recovery, a physical therapist will guide you to improve muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility while the Prosthetist will instruct you on how to use the prosthesis to its full potential.
- A prosthetist, or orthotic expert, creates a customized prosthesis if one will be used.
- With or without a prosthetic, an occupational therapist collaborates with you to increase your self-reliance and adjust to daily routines.
- A rehabilitation psychologist helps you with grief and loss associated with removal of a limb, and any associated mental health crises including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Positive Impacts

Ek het in 2015 ‘n besering gehad. Ek het vir die eerste 6 jaar gegaan vir vele operasies, van debridements to ankle fusions. En dit was ‘n aanpassing, in 2022 het my lewe en leefstyl drasties verander toe my been onder die knie geamputeer was.
